Westjet apologizes to passengers stranded in Cancun for 33 hours

An investigation will be launched by Westjet Airlines Ltd. after the passengers were stranded in Mexico. The airline said that the hotel rooms will be made available, but it didn’t happen.

Ottawa bound flight carrying 135 passengers was stranded in Cancun due to mechanical issues. It caused a 4 hour flight delay and eventually the cancellation followed.

According to the officials of the Westjet Airlines, the plane had been moving consistently during the hold up. This didn’t allowed the flight crew to offer snacks. In a statement provided by the Westjet- We fully understand that the rolling delay and the flight cancellation was not a pleasant situation, for the passengers to endure.

Right after the flight was canceled, the airline told the passengers that they would get hotels to spend the entire night without paying anything when they book flights with WestJet Airlines. But it wasn’t so, as most of them had to book their own accommodation, however, due to lack of availability.

WestJet apologizes to all the passengers who were impacted by the endless delay as well as subsequent cancellations of the flight 2841 from Cancun to Ottawa. We sincerely regret that this and the situation which followed was equally stressful and time consuming.

In addition to this, the Calgary based airline said that it will offer “appropriate reimbursement”. The reimbursement will be for the hotel stays along with a “gesture of goodwill” It will come in he form of store credit that can be spent upon any vacation package or WestJet flight.

Moreover, The Canadian Transportation Agency said that in future, the airline may have to dole out even more. It released a draft regulation for public comment under the promise of government long-promised passenger bill of rights.

The passengers who were forced to sit through long delays and who bumped from the overbooked flights will get up to $2,400 in compensation. The maximum payment to the passengers would be $1,000 and cancellations at $2,400.
