According to a mythological story, a demon named Somakasura stole the Vedas from Lord Brahma. Somakasura later hid the Vedas in the sea. When Lord Vishnu came to know of this situation, he took the Avatar of a fish, the Matsya Avatar, to fight Somakasura under the sea. Lord Vishnu killed Somakasura and returned the Vedas to Brahma.
