1) Train Station Inn

Tatamagouche Train Station was built in 1887 and served 70 years before being bought by 18- year old James LesFresne in 1974 to avoid its obliteration.

Fast forward to a few years later, he converted it into a unique hotel, and received ‘Entrepreneur Award of the Year’ for his achievement.

Nestled in the heart of Nova Scotia town of Tatamagouche, it features stays at both the decommissioned train station itself and in vintage décor boxcars and cabooses with private bed and bathrooms.

You can also opt to stay in the Stationmaster’s Suite, observe the wildlife nearby and have lobsters in the dining wagon.

Best element of this inn is that there is no train traffic to keep you awake at night since the old rail bed is now part of the Great Trail running along Tatamagouche Bay.

It’s your best bet in learning more about Canada’s resonant railway history.  If you want to explore, there is also an exceptionally scenic walking and biking trail nearby.

2) Free Spirit Spheres

Sleeping in a tree house is a child’s dream come true. And if you’re in Vancouver Island, there’s a chance to make that a reality.

Free Spirit Spheres is a 45- minute drive from Nanaimo B. C. and outfitted with 3 wooden spheres hanging from old growth trees in a sub- tropical rainforest.

These structures, crafted from cedar and spruce, aim to vaguely resemble giant seeds or nuts in their design.

The suspension of the orbs strongly mimics the spider webs, borrowing from and collaborating with their immediate environment and attached to the strongest points of nearby trees.

Wood and fiberglass construct the spheres, featuring windows in the form of portholes.

Equipped with heat, electricity, private bathrooms and space maximizing furniture, it is a nature lover’s contemporary paradise on Earth.

3) HI Ottawa Jail Hostel

You can now satisfy your curiosity of how it’s like living behind bars while keeping a clean record.

The Hl Ottawa Jail served as prison 150 years ago with countless deaths and executions.

Now said to be one of the most haunted jaunts of Canada, it will sure be a bone- chilling experience to stay at the hostel, with the full iron bar doors intact.

It serves up the best authentic experience according to reviews on Trip Advisor with both communal and private rooms, along with a side serving of ghosts.

Many visitors reported actually having an encounter with one during their stay at the hostel.

And that’s to say the least; the hostel is now a quaint, comfortable stay with its location at the heart of the city, really affordable prices and the creepy environment that seems to follow you everywhere you go.

You can go on ghost hunting tours, and wander on your own around the iron doors and stone wall passageways of your own free will as well.
