What is Omicron?

The first case of the Sarc-CoV-2 (B.1.1.529), known as Omicron was first reported in South Africa on 24 November 2021. The World Health Organisation has (WHO) deemed the Omicron variant as a variant of concern and with its growing spread in India, the GoI (Government of India) has once again revised the mandatory guidelines for international travelers and passengers returning home to India.

Revised Guidelines for International Travelers in India

The guidelines for eligibility of travelers coming to India with rules to be followed before boarding, during flight, and before arrival are the same with more strictness imposed. Book economical flight tickets to India from Canada with Tripbeam for low-priced and safe air journeys to India.

A list of important points is shared below.

  • International Travelers are to submit a copy of their vaccination certificate, RT-PCR report that should not be older than 72 hours, and a self-declaration form holding them accountable if any information is found to be false.
  • The airlines are to provide passengers with a dos and don’ts list for their travel and on-arrival protocols. The airlines are responsible to make in-flight announcements about the post-arrival testing requirements and for Following COVID-19 protocol.
  • If a passenger is found or suspected of being symptomatic then they should be isolated in the proper isolation protocol. The contacts of suspected cases are the co-passengers traveling together in a 3-seat radius with the identified Cabin Crew. These contacts are subjected to home quarantine for 14 days and tested as per IMCR protocol.
  • The travelers from at-risk countries (list is shared on the sites of the Ministry of External Affairs and Air Suvidha Portal) are all to take an RT-PCR test, post-arrival in India and wait for its result before leaving the airport or their connecting flights.
  • The travelers from non-risk countries will have 2% of passengers selected at random for COVID-19 testing by the airlines. The passengers whose reports come out as negative on arrival are to undergo home quarantine for 7 days for at-risk and non-risk countries, all the travelers of non-risk countries are also required to do the same.
  • Travelers have to conduct an RT-PCR test on the 8th day of home quarantine and submit the same on the Air Suvidha Portal. The negative result holders are required to practice self-monitoring of their health for the next 7 days.
  • Travelers with positive test reports are required to further send their samples for genomic testing at the INSACOG laboratory network and they shall be managed at an isolation facility and treated as per the laid out protocols.
  • The international travelers arriving on sea-ports or land-ports also have to follow the same protocols but the online facility is not available for such cases presently. They shall submit their self-declaration form to the concerned GoI authorities post-arrival at sea/land ports.
  • Children below the years of 5 are exempted from the pre and post-arrival COVID tests but if found symptomatic after arrival or during the home quarantine period then they will have to take the COVID-19 test.

These are the important and key points for international travelers planning for solo, group, family, or business travels to India with friends, family, or colleagues. The passengers are also advised to download the Aarogya Setu on their mobile phones.
