According to our sources, Canada has tightened its security measures at the airport for fliers traveling to India. The latest measures align with escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations. Travelers departing from Toronto have already observed noticeable changes in the screening process as the new policies take effect. Here’s everything we know about it.
Anita Anand, Canada’s Federal Transport Minister shared with CBC News, “Transport Canada has implemented temporary additional security screening measures for travellers to India out of an abundance of caution.” She also added to the statement that “Passengers may experience some screening delays while these measures are in place.”
The group handles screening travelers and their items before they enter restricted airport areas. Passengers are checked by CATSA, bags go through X – ray scanners, and hand swabs are done if needed. Air Canada advises India – bound passengers to arrive at least 4 hours early due to long security lines. The Canadian government’s travel advisory for India highlights concerns about terror threats and the Zika virus. Travelers are advised to stay informed and take precautions. As mentioned in the travel advisory issued by the Canadian government, people are getting conscious about terror attacks and Zika virus.
News18 mentioned the alert as, “Exercise a high degree of caution in India due to the threat of terrorist attacks throughout the country.” It also said, “Exercise a high degree of caution in and around Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai. Consular services in person are temporarily unavailable in those cities or surrounding areas. If you need consular services, contact the High Commission of Canada in India, located in New Delhi. At any time, you may also contact the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa.”
The alert also cautioned visitors to India to avoid visiting Jammu and Kashmir along with Pakistan borders and northeast India. This is because these are the highly affected areas that need attention.
All of this is happening because there has been an authority tussle between India and Canada. Meanwhile, India is denying all accusations and accusing the Canadian PM of harboring Khalistanis.
