A Brief Guide To Canada’s Post – Graduation Work Permit Process

Before knowing in detail about Canada’s post – graduation work permit, here’s a note to take care of first.

Note: All international students who are Canadian graduates do not qualify automatically. You need to check if the institution and your specific program of study are eligible for this.

Do studies outside Canada/online study at a Canadian learning institution count towards PGWP?

Yes, if you are studying online at one of the Canadian Designated Learning Institutions’ (DLI), it counts towards PGWP. There are specific policies regarding this with dates and years mentioned in it. Ensure you check it out and the time you spent studying before applying for a study permit doesn’t count.

Do studies in Canada/in class at a Canadian learning institution count towards PGWP?

Yes, after applying for a study permit, you need to finish at least 50% of the course curriculum in class in Canada. The rest can be done online. However, you need to ensure that you are studying in one of the Canadian Designated Learning Institutions’ (DLI) and the study program must be applicable for PGWP. You need to know about these things before getting affordable flight tickets from Canada to India with us.

What is the valid time period of your PGWP?

It depends on various factors like length of the study program or the expiration date of a student’s passport. PGWP is usually 3 years for a student completing a master’s degree program course, where the duration of the course is less than 2 years. But it needs to be a minimum of 8 months. For better understanding, we divided the valid time period of PGWP into 3 program parts.

Master’s Degree Programs

If your program duration is less than 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials), you are not eligible for PGWP. If your study program is of at least 8 months, you can apply for a PGWP of 3 years. Even if the program is less than 2 years, international students can apply for a 3 year PGWP, provided that all other criteria are met. But this doesn’t apply for diploma or certificate programs.

Other Programs

If the study program is less than 8 months, the student is not eligible for a PGWP. If the program is more than 8 months but less than 2 years, the student is eligible for a PGWP of the same length as the program. If the study course is 2 years or more, they are eligible for a PGWP of 3 years.

Multiple Programs

If international students are graduating from multiple programs, they can combine the length of each program into a single PGWP. However, each program must be eligible for PGWP and their duration must be 8 months or more.
