81 Stranded Tourists Rescued in Spiti Amid Power Outages and Road Issues

Road Closures Due to Avalanches and Landslides

Authorities said on March 4 that up to 81 tourists who were left stranded in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh as a result of road restrictions after heavy snowfall had been moved to safer areas.

On Monday morning, as the excavator operator was clearing a blocked part of the Shimla-Kinnaur road at Negulsari in Kinnaur on National Highway 5, he was shot at by falling stones. Authorities identified the dead as 27-year-old Madan, a native of Kullu.

The Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), Chandigarh, issued an avalanche warning for five districts in Himachal Pradesh on Monday: Chamba, Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Shimla.

As a result of multiple avalanches and landslides brought on by the unceasing rain and snowfall over the previous three days, the State’s approximately 650 roads—including five national highways—remained blocked to traffic on Monday night, according to the state emergency operation center.

As per the police statement, the 81 tourists who were left stranded in Lahaul and the Spiti Valley area were relocated to other hotels and homestays on Sunday night. Furthermore, there are roughly 290 inaccessible routes throughout the tribal territory, and several settlements have been without power for the last two days.

The cellular network has also been affected by the intense rain and snowfall in Lahaul and Spiti, it continued.

There are currently 158 closed roads in Shimla, 63 in Chamba, 50 in Kinnaur, 32 in Kullu, 7 in Mandi, and 1 in the Kangra district.

According to the emergency center, 1,436 transformers are presently out of function throughout the State, and 124 water schemes have been interrupted.

According to the meteorological department bulletin, high altitude and tribal areas saw another snowfall spell. In the last 24 hours, Koksar recorded 40 cm of snow, Gondla 33 cm, Kothi 27 cm, Keylong 21 cm, Kufri 5 cm, and Kalpa 4.5 cm.

Rainfall Data for Various Locations

Manali saw the most rain in the state—60 mm—followed by Tissa (52 mm), Poanta Sahib (26 mm), Kataula (33 mm), and Bhattiyat (31 mm). According to the news, 10 mm of rain fell on the state capital of Shimla.

According to officials, an avalanche struck Dara Waterfall on Sunday near Jasrat village in Lahaul and Spiti, blocking the Chenab River’s flow and setting off an alarm in the nearby area.

The people living in the nearby villages of Jobrang, Rapi, Jasrath, Tarand, and Tharot were instructed to exercise caution and notify the closest police station in the event of an emergency.

The State was still experiencing a cold wave. The minimum temperature dropped noticeably throughout the State. The lowest temperature was recorded at minus 11.2 degrees Celsius at Kukumseri, Lahaul, and Spiti.
